As we continue to expand the Room Service brand, (Our Palm Springs store recently opened!) we not only look to grow in terms of our creative furniture pieces but to also connect with amazing artist that create great art for our stores and website that our clients will cherish for years to come. As the quest to find a few new artist to add into our fold starts, we couldn’t help but to think of some great artist like Warhol, Lichtenstein, Haring and others that molded the pop-art era (Which we LOVE!), that’s still just as popular and influential today as it was decades ago.
Andy Warhol- Although thought to be a controversial artist, Warhol is among the most notable figures to emerge from the pop-art movement. His take on celebrity culture, artistic expression and popular advertisements set the trends for the times during his reign as the pop-art King. Drugs, sex, and partying at famed establishments like Studio 54, and Warhol’s own studio, which was a revolving door filled with intellectuals, drag queens, artist, and celebrities, penetrated his work on daily basis. Warhol influenced and continues to influences the work of not only painters like Jean-Michel Basquiat, but musicians like Swizz Beatz, and even clothing lines that have featured his art work.
Roy Lichtenstein-By using the old fashioned comic book strips as his inspiration, Lichtenstein was able to make light of his tongue-and-cheek humor, that often poked fun at women and relationship among other subject. Lichtenstein’s artwork along with Warhol was featured on the U2 Popmart Tour, and the Movie Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian.
Keith Haring: Haring’s use of human images, animals and bold lines made Haring one of the visible icons of the pop-art movement. After being diagnosed with AIDS in 1988, Haring set up the Haring Foundation, which contributed funding and imagery to various AIDS organizations to bring attention and awareness to the cause. Haring’s imagery can be seen on popular brands such as, Absolut Vodka, Coca Cola, and Lucky Strike Cigarettes. During Haring’s later year’s his goal was to create large scale pieces in public spaces for free, where his work would resonate for decades. Additional subject matter for his painting included the crack cocaine epidemic and Anti-Apartheid.
These are just a few artist that we love and find inspiration from. Are there any artist that you love? We’d love to hear about them.
